What is So.cl launched by Microsoft?

Pronounced Social, it is currently labelled as an “an experiment in open search” not an actual rival to existing social networking websites. Microsoft So.cl seems to be a hope to boost Bing market share, which was 4.4% globally. So.cl was initially open just for some college campuses, but it is now available for the use of general public. However, it still continues partnerships with certain Universities in the US.

So.cl allows people to share and express opinions on search results that they find interesting. Members can create collages of content that they found through the Bing search engine share results with friends. Collages fall in certain topics that users have created; which is similar to Pinterest.

Microsoft Social

Users can follow people with similar interests and see what their friends are searching for. If a member likes content that someone else has shared they can “smile” at it.

Members can also “start a video party” allowing them to watch the same video with other people, express their opinions about it, and communicate through chat. Members can create their own video lists, and browse through other member’s lists.

So.cl can be accessed by signing in with Facebook or a Microsoft Live account which also makes sharing through these sites easy.  However, user activity will only show up on Facebook if the member choose to use this function. As is becoming standard these days, all posts on So.cl can be seen by others but privacy settings can be changed to only show the content you want others to see.

So what do you think? Will your search queries become status updates?
